Every WordPress backup plugin claims to keep your site safe. Most of them do back up your files and database exactly as advertised. Where they tend to fall short isn’t the backup itself — it’s everything around it that determines whether that backup is actually useful the day you need it.
What the popular options actually do well
Plugins like UpdraftPlus, Duplicator, and BackWPup are genuinely solid at the core job: scheduled backups of your files and database, stored to cloud destinations like Google Drive, Dropbox, or Amazon S3. For a lot of small sites, a properly configured free or low-cost backup plugin is a reasonable starting point.
The differences between them mostly come down to scheduling flexibility, storage integrations, and how painless the restore process is when you actually need it — which turns out to be the part that matters most and gets tested the least.
What “having a backup plugin” doesn’t automatically mean
- That it’s actually running. A plugin that silently fails to connect to your storage destination, or quietly stops after a hosting change, can leave you with weeks of believing you’re covered when you’re not.
- That you can restore from it quickly. Most backup plugins are optimized for taking backups, not for a fast, guided restore under pressure. Restoring a large database backup manually, at 11pm, during an actual incident, is a very different experience than clicking “Backup Now” during a calm afternoon.
- That it protects against every failure mode. A backup stored on the same server as your site doesn’t help if that server has a hardware failure. A backup plugin that only saves the database misses your uploaded media. Coverage gaps are common and easy to miss until the moment you need the piece that isn’t there.
The test that actually matters: not “do I have a backup plugin installed,” but “have I actually restored from a backup and confirmed it works.” Most site owners can’t answer yes to the second question.
What to look for if you’re choosing one
- Off-server storage by default — a backup stored on the same server it’s protecting isn’t protecting against server-level failure
- Full-site coverage — files and database, not just one or the other
- Retention history long enough that you can roll back further than “yesterday” if a problem goes unnoticed for a few days
- A restore process you’ve actually tested, not just assumed will work when needed
Where a Care Plan fits in
Every NetConnect Digital Care Plan includes daily backups stored off-server, independent of any single plugin. If a restore is ever needed, it’s something we handle directly — not a manual process you’re troubleshooting alone under pressure. That’s the part a backup plugin alone usually can’t give you: someone who actually knows the restore works, because it’s been tested before you ever needed it.
